Advancing Hepatitis C Screening: Insights from AST Pesaro-Urbino’s First-Year Results

Hepatitis C Virus (HCV) remains a major public health concern, leading to chronic liver disease and severe complications if left untreated. In 2016, the World Health Organization (WHO) launched a global initiative to eliminate HCV by 2030. As part of this effort, Italy implemented a nationwide screening program, targeting individuals born between 1969 and 1989. A recent study conducted at AST Pesaro-Urbino in the Marche region provides valuable insights into the program’s effectiveness. A recent study titled " Evaluation of Screening Program for Hepatitis C Virus (HCV) At AST Pesaro-Urbino: First Year Results" published in the Journal of Biomedical Research & Environmental Sciences (JBRES).

Key Findings from the Study

๐Ÿ”น Screening Coverage
Between August 2023 and July 2024, six blood collection centers screened 6,319 individuals, representing 12.4% of the target population.

๐Ÿ”น Prevalence of HCV
Among those screened, 64 individuals (1%) tested positive for anti-HCV antibodies, and 8 (0.13%) were confirmed to have active HCV infections.

๐Ÿ”น Gender-Based Trends
Despite a higher participation rate among females (59.2% vs. 40.8% males), the positivity rate was higher in males.

๐Ÿ”น Public Health Impact
The low prevalence of active infections suggests that prior public health interventions and antiviral treatments have been effective in reducing HCV cases.

Implications for Future Research & Screening Strategies

The study underscores the importance of continued screening efforts to identify undiagnosed HCV cases and prevent transmission. Expanding the screening program to include individuals born before 1969 and improving outreach strategies could enhance early detection and treatment.
